Millstone Township is a township in Monmouth County, New Jersey, Us. It is located inside the Raritan Valley region and is a part of the New York Metropolitan Surface area. The township was named for the Millstone River (a major tributary of the Raritan River), whose proper noun derives from an incident in which a millstone was dropped into it.[21] [22] [23] The headwaters for the Millstone River originate in the township.[24] [25]

As of the 2010 United States Demography, the township's population was 10,566,[x] [11] [12] reflecting an increase of ane,596 (+17.8%) from the 8,970 counted in the 2000 Census, which had in turn increased past iii,901 (+77.0%) from the five,069 counted in the 1990 Census.[26]

Millstone was formed as a township past an act of the New Jersey Legislature on February 28, 1844, from portions of Freehold Township and Upper Freehold Township, as well as role of Monroe Township in Middlesex County. The portions taken from Monroe Township were relinquished in 1845. On May 29, 1937, portions of the township were taken to grade the civic of Jersey Homesteads (now Roosevelt).[27]

The township has been one of the state's highest-income communities. Based on data from the American Community Survey for 2013–2017, Millstone Township residents had a median household income of $156,891, ranked ninth in the state amidst municipalities with more than ten,000 residents, more than double the statewide median of $76,475.[28]

Geography [edit]

According to the United States Census Bureau, the township had a full expanse of 37.18 square miles (96.30 km2), including 36.61 square miles (94.81 kmtwo) of land and 0.58 square miles (i.49 km2) of water (1.55%).[2] [three]

There are two unincorporated communities inside the township served by the Usa Postal Service equally post offices. Clarksburg is served by post part Cypher Lawmaking 08510 and Perrineville is served as Null lawmaking 08535.[29] Other unincorporated communities and identify names located entirely or partially inside the township include Baird, Bairdsville, Bergen Mills, Burksville, Carrs Corner, Carrs Tavern, Charleston Springs, Disbrow Hill, Ely, Elys Corner, Fair Play, Hillhurt, Holmeson, Pine Loma, Smithburg, Rock Tavern and Sweetman.[thirty]

The township borders Freehold Township, Manalapan Township, Roosevelt and Upper Freehold Township in Monmouth County; East Windsor Township and Robbinsville Township in Mercer County; Monroe Township in Middlesex County; and Jackson Township in Bounding main Canton.[31] [32] [33]

According to the A. W. Kuchler U.Due south. potential natural vegetation types, Millstone Township, New Jersey would have an Appalachian Oak (104) vegetation type with an Eastern Hardwood Wood (25) vegetation form.[34]

Census 2010 [edit]

The 2010 United States census counted x,566 people, 3,301 households, and 2,888 families in the township. The population density was 288.8 per foursquare mile (111.5/km2). At that place were 3,434 housing units at an average density of 93.9 per foursquare mile (36.3/km2). The racial makeup was 89.44% (9,450) White, 3.59% (379) Black or African American, 0.17% (xviii) Native American, 4.51% (476) Asian, 0.00% (0) Pacific Islander, 0.80% (85) from other races, and 1.50% (158) from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of whatsoever race were five.48% (579) of the population.[10]

Of the 3,301 households, 45.eight% had children under the age of 18; 78.five% were married couples living together; 5.6% had a female householder with no married man present and 12.5% were non-families. Of all households, 9.three% were fabricated upwardly of individuals and 3.0% had someone living lone who was 65 years of age or older. The boilerplate household size was 3.20 and the boilerplate family size was 3.42.[10]

The median historic period was 42.6 years. For every 100 females, the population had 99.4 males. For every 100 females ages 18 and older in that location were 99.3 males.[10]

The Census Bureau's 2006-2010 American Community Survey showed that (in 2010 inflation-adapted dollars) median household income was $134,909 (with a margin of error of +/- $15,849) and the median family income was $139,535 (+/- $20,761). Males had a median income of $92,222 (+/- $13,047) versus $66,090 (+/- $14,854) for females. The per capita income for the civic was $l,390 (+/- $5,755). About 0.4% of families and 0.3% of the population were below the poverty line, including 0.7% of those nether age 18 and none of those historic period 65 or over.[47]

Census 2000 [edit]

As of the 2000 United states of america Census[eighteen] there were 8,970 people, 2,708 households, and two,426 families residing in the township. The population density was 244.0 people per square mile (94.two/kmii). There were two,797 housing units at an average density of 76.one per foursquare mile (29.4/kmii). The racial makeup of the township was 97.83% White, 1.05% African American, 0.10% Native American, 1.43% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 0.61% from other races, and 0.94% from 2 or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 3.51% of the population.[45] [46]

There were 2,708 households, out of which 52.8% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 81.four% were married couples living together, five.5% had a female householder with no hubby present, and 10.4% were non-families. 7.5% of all households were made upwardly of individuals, and two.1% had someone living solitary who was 65 years of age or older. The boilerplate household size was 3.28 and the average family unit size was 3.46.[10] [46]

In the township the population was spread out, with 32.8% under the age of 18, iv.five% from eighteen to 24, 31.vii% from 25 to 44, 25.0% from 45 to 64, and 6.0% who were 65 years of age or older. The median historic period was 37 years. For every 100 females, in that location were 99.four males. For every 100 females age xviii and over, there were 96.0 males.[10] [46]

The median income for a household in the township was $104,561, and the median income for a family was $106,116. Males had a median income of $74,333 versus $50,036 for females. The per capita income for the township was $58,285. About 3.8% of families and four.9% of the population were below the poverty line, including 6.0% of those nether age 18 and 4.eight% of those historic period 65 or over.[10] [46]

Local regime [edit]

Millstone is governed under the Township course of New Jersey municipal government, one of 141 municipalities (of the 565) statewide that use this grade, the second-nigh unremarkably used form of government in the country.[48] The Township Commission is comprised of 5 members, who are elected direct by the voters at-big in partisan elections to serve iii-year terms of office on a staggered footing, with either one or two seats coming up for election each twelvemonth every bit function of the November general election in a three-year cycle.[8] [49] At an annual reorganization meeting, the council selects i of its members to serves every bit mayor and another as deputy mayor.

The Township Committee is Millstone's legislative torso. It sets policies, approves budgets, determines municipal revenue enhancement rates, and passes resolutions and ordinances to govern the boondocks. In September 2018, Al Ferro was selected from three candidates nominated by the Republican municipal committee to fill the seat expiring in December 2019 that had been vacated past Robert Kinsey in August due to illness.[55]

Federal, country and canton representation [edit]

Millstone Township is located in the fourth Congressional Commune[56] and is part of New Jersey's 12th state legislative commune.[11] [57] [58]

For the 117th United States Congress, New Jersey's Fourth Congressional District is represented past Chris Smith (R, Hamilton Township).[59] [60] New Bailiwick of jersey is represented in the United States Senate by Democrats Cory Booker (Newark, term ends 2027)[61] and Bob Menendez (Harrison, term ends 2025).[62] [63]

For the 2022–2023 session, the 12th Legislative District of the New Bailiwick of jersey Legislature is represented in the State Senate by Samuel D. Thompson (R, Old Bridge Township) and in the Full general Assembly by Robert D. Clifton (R, Matawan) and Ronald S. Dancer (R, Plumsted Township).[64]

Monmouth County is governed past a Board of Chosen Freeholders consisting of v members who are elected at-large to serve three year terms of function on a staggered basis, with either 1 or two seats up for ballot each year as part of the Nov full general election. As of March 23, 2011, there were a total of 6,954 registered voters in Millstone Township, of which 1,159 (sixteen.7%) were registered equally Democrats, 2,621 (37.seven%) were registered every bit Republicans and iii,171 (45.6%) were registered equally Unaffiliated. There were three voters registered to other parties.[77]

Bush received 65.7% of the vote (iii,289 ballots cast), outpolling Democrat John Kerry with 33.3% (one,668 votes) and other candidates with 0.6% (41 votes), amidst the v,005 ballots cast past the township's 6,603 registered voters, for a turnout per centum of 75.8.[81]

Students in 9th through twelfth grades for public school attend Allentown High School in Allentown, as role of a sending/receiving relationship with the Upper Freehold Regional School District, which too includes students from Allentown and Upper Freehold Township.[93] As of the 2018–xix school year, the high schoolhouse had an enrollment of one,206 students and 89.five classroom teachers (on an FTE ground), for a student–teacher ratio of xiii.five:1.[94]

The township does not take a local constabulary section. Millstone Township is patrolled by the New Jersey State Police.[95]

European monetary system [edit]

The Millstone Township Fire Department provides Ems with a staffed ambulance, 24/seven. The Millstone Township First Help Squad was closed in 2020.[96]

The local burn down section consists of 12 career firefighters that provide burn protection and outset responder medical care between the hours of 6 am and 6 pm. Volunteer firefighters cover from 6 pm to 6 am. supported by on duty career firefighters.[97]

CR 571, CR 524, CR 526, CR 527 and CR 537 are the main county highways which pass through Millstone. A pocket-size portion of Route 33 passes through the northern tip of Millstone prior to entering Manalapan and Monroe Township.

The New Bailiwick of jersey Turnpike (also known as Interstate 95) is accessible in neighboring Robbinsville Township (Exit 7A), East Windsor Township (Leave viii) and Monroe Township (Go out 8A).

Millstone Township is served by CentraState Healthcare System, which is affiliated with Rutgers Robert Forest Johnson Medical Schoolhouse, located in neighboring Freehold Township. The regional infirmary is a 287-bed medical facility. CentraState Healthcare system too provides healthcare through its various family practices in communities beyond western Monmouth and southern Middlesex counties in central New Jersey. The side by side closest hospitals to the township are the Hamilton Division of Robert Wood Johnson University Infirmary in nearby Hamilton Township, Penn Medicine Princeton Medical Center in nearby Plainsboro Township, and the Old Bridge Division of Raritan Bay Medical Centre in nearby Old Bridge Township.
